Human rights activist and Lagos-based
lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN) has
tasked Nigerians to make 2015 general
elections issue-based and not allow
politicians divide them along primordial
sentiments.
The legal luminary while delivering a
speech at the National Education
Summit organised by the four unions in
Nigerian universities with the theme
“Towards a system of Education for
Liberation in Nigeria”, specifically tasked
the campus unions led by the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to
demand from those aspiring to become
president and governor what their plans
are for adequate funding of universities,
eradication of illiteracy and access to
education for the Nigerian child.
He said they should extract commitment
from aspirants to fund public education.
According to him, it is unfortunate that
those at the helms of affairs benefited
from qualitative free education but
preferred to commercialise it when they
assumed office under the guise that no
government can fund education.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria who
noted that if 2015 elections is allowed to
be issue-based, religion, ethnicity,
sectionalism and other primordial
considerations being used by politicians
to divide Nigerians would have no place.
Falana who noted that the current crop
of politicians benefit through the politics
of divide and rule at the expense of the
electorate, added that Nigeria cannot
afford to continue to destroy the future
of her youths and human resources
while other countries invest in education
and build their youths for future
leadership.
He noted that the ruling class has
created more problems for public
educational institutions by empowering
private individuals through
commercialisation.
